Students should indicate their interest for this program as soon as possible during their first or second year of graduate study at NU.
Trainee candidates will be typically considered during the spring of their first or second academic year.
Program Requirements:
- Must be enrolled full time within (or admitted to) one of the participating DEPARTMENTS at Northwestern University. Normally, Trainees will participate in the second and third years of their Ph.D. program.
- Must be a citizen, non-citizen national, or a permanent resident of the United States. Foreign non-US resident students may apply, and are most welcome to participate in all aspects of the Training Program, but are not eligible for support by the Program.
- Must have an outstanding undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate academic record as evidenced by the cumulative grade point average, as well as excellent scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytic portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Students who are interested in the Training Program and who have not yet applied for a graduate program at the university should contact Professor Lonnie Shea, the Program Director, regarding which graduate programs would be appropriate choices for their admission to the University. First year graduate students in participating DEPARTMENTS may contact Faculty Preceptors in their departments.
Program Applications are typically due after the end of Spring Quarter and include:
- A 2-3 page statement discussing why the student wishes to participate and how he/she will meet the program requirements (incl. courses and Industrial internship). Should also include a discussion of PhD research goals.
- A copy of the student's undergraduate and graduate transcripts
- A sealed letter of support from their advisor
- A short CV, incl honors, presentations, research experience, publications, etc.
