Thank you for visiting our web pages, which describe the main features of the Predoctoral Biotechnology Training Program at Northwestern, an NIH/NIGMS supported Training Program. The Program stresses the interdisciplinary nature of biotechnology training through course work, research, industrial internships, seminars and other opportunities that broaden the students' training in and understanding of modern biotechnology. Special emphasis is placed on the students' exposure to industrial research, as well as to business, organizational and ethical aspects of the biotechnology enterprise.

Successful research and training in biotechnology requires collaborations among researchers working in diverse areas, both in academic and industrial institutions. In this spirit, this program brings together faculty and trainees from a wide range of areas in the life sciences (including bioengineering) from several departments or programs representing different schools within Northwestern. In addition, through industrial internships and on-campus visits, lectures and seminars by industrial scientists, the Program aims to broaden the students' knowledge and understanding of industrial biotechnology.

Faculty for this Training Program are mainly drawn from four departments/programs (all four on the Evanston Campus): The Interdepartmental Biological Sciences (IBiS) doctoral program; the Biomedical Engineering Department (BME), the Department of Chemistry (Chemistry), and the Chemical & Biological Engineering Department (ChBE). The Program however is committed to including and supporting any qualified student from any department or program of the University.

As a private institution and using its considerable financial strength, Northwestern University has made a commitment to create and maintain a superior environment for research in the life sciences, biotechnology and bioengineering. Details can be found under FACULTY, RESOURCES and LINKS.

I hope that you will find the information contained in these pages and links useful, and that you will decide to apply to Northwestern and to this Program. We will be looking forward to welcoming all qualified applicants. If you have any questions regarding this Program, please feel free to contact me by phone or email!
